It is always encouraging to see a new group of young people, albeit part of an established, adult group, presenting their first production. West End Youth are part of West End Operatic Society and the core of the new group is the large number of children assembled to appear in the main society’s quite recent production of Oliver!
The show was called Time Warp but featured just one number from The Rocky Horror Show. Otherwise, the term “time warp” refers to the wide range of musicals covered, presented in sections named after decades, from The 1950s to The 2000s. The featured numbers were well chosen to demonstrate the talents of this large group which, according to the programme comprised up to 42 children, of various ages, split into three groups.
During the first half, I found the sound levels put the soloists at a disadvantage, their solos being overcome rather than enhanced. This problem was, to some extent, addressed in the second half. I know it can seem a little unkind to point out deficiencies in a show involving a keen, energetic group of children but there were tuning problems on occasions, possibly inevitable when some such young children are involved.
That said, this was a fine first effort by a large group of children which bodes well for the future. Enhanced by colourful costumes, good lighting and appropriate choreography, this was an impressive first outing for West End Youth. I look forward to seeing their next production and, in the future, as regulars and, perhaps, leading players in the senior society’s productions
Youth Advisers comments
It was an honour to be invited to the inaugural production for this youth branch of Newcastle WEOS. The energy and enjoyment of the cast was palpable and they executed every number with enthusiasm. I’m sure this will be the first of many productions and I look forward to seeing them develop as a company.
Councillors comments
It was great to see a lot of children enthused to be on the stage, entertaining and making people smile - long may it continue - all the more gratifying to see that the youth were supporting a childrens charity - the Nicole Rich Foundation - in an effort to give something back to the community - well done - I look forward to watch the youth delvelop over the years.
