Circle Players staged three short comedy plays that went down very well to a very appreciate audience.
Fumed Oak by Noel Coward directed by Clair Tregellis, assisted by Clive Barlow, depicts how life in the Gow family home is about to change. The quiet and assuming husband, Henry, turns against domineering wife Doris and decides enough is enough and leaves her, his daughter and Doris’s mother, Mrs. Rockett, to go off and live in South Africa or somewhere else hot. He has been saving money over the last 15 years just for such an occasion. This play was not only directed by Clair, but she played the part of Doris, with her real-life husband Lee playing Henry Gow and her daughter Amy playing Elsie Gow. A truly family affair. They were joined by Jean Kerby as Mrs. Rockett who kept knitting throughout the piece. With a well thought out set this play went down well with the audience.
Sparrows by Charles Mander. This play tells us the tale of a small band of people who are going to blow up a power plant all for the love of the Sparrows. Mr. Makepiece (John Richardson) meets Joyce (Margaret Jeffcoat) on the promenade of a seaside town and she tells him about the Sparrows. They are joined by Joan De-Sousa and Sophie Grace-Rowe as Edward and Sandra who try and persuade Mr. Makepiece to do the deed. It was a pleasure to see this play again with some marvellous performances as I had the pleasure of watching this play earlier on in the year reach the quarter final of the All England Festival. Congratulations to the talented cast.
Albert by Richard Harris. What happens when a girl from Finland gets together with an Italian and an Englishman but none of them can speak each other’s language. It leads to a very funny play. Amy Tregellis, George Georgiou and Matt Round gave good performances as the three characters. This must have been a very difficult play to rehearse as a lot of lines were either repeated or answered with a completely unexpected reply. The audience really loved this play with its play on words. Again, a simple set but director Margaret Jeffcoat made full use of it.
This was really a good night’s entertainment showing how versatile of Circle Players really are. Its not easy to put on three different plays during one evening but they did it with style and ease.
Congratulations to all the cast and crew.
