Three well-acted and well directed comedies formed the basis for a good evening’s entertainment at the society’s nice little theatre.
The first, Joining The Club by David Tristram was a twenty minute two hander directed by Sarah Knights. It tells the story of married couple Jenny and Tom and Jenny decides to tell her husband that she is expecting. However he has some news of his own – he has resigned from his job. The enjoyable action was simply set in the living room and was well performed by Laura McCubbin and Danny Barr.
The second and third offerings of the night were both directed by Keith Davison, the first one of which was Little Grimley presents Strictly Sex Factor On Ice, again written by David Tristram. Very funny, it revolves around an amateur dramatic society fighting for it’s existence and the Chairman, Gordon, has come up with a cunning plan to compete with Saturday night TV. The title probably speaks for itself! With a cast of four, Peter Abraham, Mark Bateman, Helen Davison and Kay McGuire, working extremely hard I felt the script almost lost it’s way when it came to the Strictly/X Factor style performance. However, it was thoroughly enjoyable.
The final piece was Easy Stages by Nick Warburton. This involves the backstage crew of another amateur society preparing for Hamlet and anyone involved in theatre of any kind will have recognised most of the plots that were incorporated into the script, including the missing team member, the candlestick that is moved, the positioning of a rug etc., etc. Peter Abraham, Danny Barr, Mark Bateman and Helen Davison made their second appearances of the evening and they formed a strong team with Lorna Blake, Shannon Fishburn (who’s performance I particularly enjoyed) and Rachel Lawson. Again this was a very funny and busy play and, as with the other two plays, it was enjoyed by an appreciative audience.
