They Came From Mars and Landed Outside the Farndale Avenue Church Hall is a comedy by David McGillivray who in collaboration with Walter Zerlin Jnr has written ten plays in The Farndale Avenue Townswomen’s Guild Dramatic Society series which spoof local amateur dramatic productions.  In this play The Farndale Avenue ladies attempt lift off with their Dramatic Society’s unique production of a sci fi thriller. Needless to say, high tech effects going awry and the limited talents of some group members ensure that the cast remains firmly on the ground some more than others.  The nail biting action is interrupted to present the Flower Arranging Award!

The sets were very cleverly devised and together with the very effective lighting and sound gave the cast a good foundation for their roles.  The costumes were up to the usual high standard and their creativity enhanced the production.  The creativity in Act 2 was most innovative and in Townswomen’s Guild terms worth an award of ‘First Class’.  The play within a play had its own programme which made hilarious reading.  The names of the crew had cleverly been crafted which drew a chuckle on each one - from ‘Aveline Darling’ the prompt to ‘Ivan Idea’ the Set Designer together with a note about a ‘Petition for Purple Rinses’.

This was an exhilarating, hilarious production.  Each and every member of the cast made a significant contribution to this highly successful show.  The very talented cast worked well as a team and maintained a good pace throughout and the crew more than adequately support them.  The directors are to be congratulated on the imaginative use of the stage and stage directions.   This production delightfully transported the audience both back in time to the eras of the ‘blue rinse’ and forward in time and space.
