My favourite of all the Gilbert & Sullivan operettas, this was performed well by The Birmingham Savoyards with some nice harmonies coming through, especially in the accapello sections.

Robert Mead gave a strong performance as Jack Point. Robert always has a good stage presence. He was supported by Jo Smith as Elsie Maynard, wonderful singing voice. Colonel Fairfax was played by Mark Ellse, again a very strong voice, you could hear every word. The firtatious Phoebe Meryll was played by Sharon Tozer as Phoebe Meryll, who came over to the audience really well. Dame Carruthers was played by Janet James, again Janet has a very strong stage presence and this role really suited her. Strong support came from Paul Wozniak as Wilfred Shadbolt, a very realisitic Head Jailer and Assistant Tormentor. Stewart Keiller as Sir Richard Cholmondeley in this hi first outing with The Savoyards sang well as did Bill Rogers as Sergeant Meryll, who was well supported by John Hindle as his son Leonard.

Good support came from the chorus, who instead of just coming on in a group to sing, came on as if they were part of the scene. Fantastic singing.

Musical Director Martin Fautley, kept everyone together with a fine sounding orchestra.

Producer Janet Davies and the whole company should be proud of this production.
