Compilation shows, such as this one, can be tricky to do as the company has no control over the songs that have been put into the show.   In this case it was the works of Kander and Ebb and the songs were, in the main unfamiliar to the audience.    This can be a blessing, because the songs are new and fresh.  However, it can also be a curse because the audience are not familiar with them.

Personally I like to hear different songs and the first half content of this show was well balanced, with a variety of different styles.   Unfortunately I found the second half rather less varied.  Of course this is down to the compiler of the show and the company have to work with that.

The singing, in the main, was excellent, it would not be fair to single out specific soloists because everyone sung well, although there seemed to be one or two odd notes that didn’t ‘jell’ with the rest of the song.  I know that Kander & Ebb’s work can be a little discordant so I am not sure if these notes were as written or not.

The cast all wore black throughout with one notable exception and I found this unrelieved black did not add to the visual experience for the audience.   Again I am not sure if this was dictated by the compiler of the show but I would have liked to see have seen more colour touches introduced.

Technically a good show and, for those who appreciate good song writing and vocal delivery it was enjoyable.   However, as an audience pleaser, I suspect it isn’t a show to put ‘bodies on seats’.    This a pity as Brentwood Operatic has a lot of talent and it would be nice to see larger audiences enjoying that.

I enjoyed the talent, and most of the content, so well done
