St Philip’s Junior Workshop mark their 33rd anniversary and they pride themselves on being all-inclusive and welcoming children to grow in confidence and allowing them to shine. Directors Adam Manning and Rachael Jackson’s production is The World According to Snoopy!!!
The set is in keeping with the cartoon and looks very childlike, which is correct. Stage Left are flat trees and Stage Right is a bright yellow post-box. Centre Stage is a very large red kennel and various boxes are used for setting and to create scenes as the cast move them around, stacking to create school lockers and chairs. The cast bring on various creations of set - again cartoon like - the cinema and the psychiatric booth. The set has lots of primary colours and the black and white feel of a newspaper. Set Design and Props Liane Critchley, Stage Manager Racheal Jackson. Costumes were in keeping and true to the characters with some subtle touches. Wardrobe by Mina Kirkbright and Olive Etchelles. Sound and Lighting all played a part in helping the story come alive with the muffled indistinguishable sound of the teacher. Sound by Jon Lyons and Lighting by Janice Lyons.
Philip Harper put the cast through their paces with what I thought was a difficult and tricky lib. Helped by Jo Whitaker on Guitar. Loved Just One Person - well done. Choreographers were Adam Manning and Paige Burgess who managed the limited space well.
The Cast worked well together - just remember, when in the wings if mics are on you can be heard! The cast were Holly Sessions and Sophie Elliott playing Peanuts. A very bright all-in yellow dungaree outfit with feathers on her cap was worn by Rebecca Jackson playing Woodstock non-speaking role. Lacey-Jai Walker playing Linus’ older sister Lucy was dressed in black and white. Callum Morris-Broome was Charlie Brown just pushing for someone to like him - had good facial expressions - well done!.
Linus played by Kaitlyn Walker was the one who needed a comfort blanket and went into melt down when it was washed. Some lovely moments.
Beatrice Whitaker was Sally, Charlie Brown’s younger sister very precocious, madly in love with Linus and very much thinking he is husband material. One to watch. Beatrice’s accent was spot on.
Kylah Green played the title role of Snoopy, the daydreaming dog. All dressed in white with black dog collar with hair plaited and looped to look like ears. Kylah made good use of the stage and the kennel. Diction was clear and a confident performance.
Last but not least was Peppermint Patty the tomboy, who calls Charlie Brown ‘Chuck’ played by Jessica Bridge dressed in khaki with a gorgeous voice - loved “Poor Sweet Baby” - well done Jessica!
Congratulations to Cast and Crew. Thank you from Rachel and I for the lovely hospitality.
