I had the pleasure to visit MOBS youth group of Retford Light Operatic Society last year, a treat that I have just witnessed again. From the opening of the curtain to the finale, this very talented group of young people expertly led us along the Yellow Brick Road.
The director, musical director and choreographer nurtured the cast through months of hard work producing teamwork of their usual high standard. The scenery and lighting was simply wonderful and gave a professional edge to the overview of the production.
Special mention must be paid to the Scarecrow, played by Matthew Heald, who was brilliantly flexible throughout. But of course the overall stars were Toto the dog closely followed by Dorothy, portrayed by Rose Storey.
One small criticism that I find is common with most youth productions is that the diction and projection in both lib and musical score could have been more crisp and defined. To choose to use the music and lyrics of the MGM motion picture score was brave but well rewarded.
Thank you once again MOBS and I look forward to seeing you again in 2017.
