Coventry Youth Operetta Group’s production of The Wizard of Oz portrays the much-loved family musical with energy and enthusiasm.
The story follows a young girl named Dorothy who is swept away in a tornado to a magical land and embarks on a quest to see the mysterious wizard who can help her return home. Dorothy filled the theatre with her rendition of ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ and gave a fantastic performance overall. The Wicked Witch was perfectly wicked and that cackle echoed through the theatre. Glinda has a lovely kindness to her performance her solo pieces were a pleasure to listen to.
The principle cast did a lovely job in their roles in Kansas, but it was once we were in Oz that they really came into their own. The Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion each had defined and constant characters throughout the show. The Guard and Wizard rounded out the principal cast and left a smile of the audience faces. Although Toto did steal the show! Having a real dog can be tricky but there were no problems.
The company numbers filled the stage; to get so many people on stage for a choreographed dance can be a challenge but there were no signs of difficulties. Those with supporting roles during these numbers did a very good job vocally and stayed in character. The tap dance in ‘Jitterbug’ was particularly impressive.
The set changed flawlessly from Kansas to Oz. The production employed a unique technique of stage and ultraviolet lights to portray the tornado sweeping Dorothy away.
There were some issues with the sound but the cast overcame these with maturity beyond their years.
The entire production was polished and colourful with a great set and some iconic and colourful costumes and makeup. An outstanding show.
