The story of the show is well known and the real experience for discerning members of the audience is to see and hear the young principals in the junior section grow and develop their acting, singing and dancing skills. Anna Cowen was an excellent choice in the role of Dorothy as it is a major part to learn and sustain for two Acts. Kara McQueen as Miss Gulch/the Wicked Witch caught the wickedness of the part casting her evil spells on all who crossed her path. Dorothy meets three unusual friends as she travels along the Yellow Brick Road, the first being Scarecrow played amusingly by Jamie Dougall in a threadbare and strawy costume. Next was Tin Man, played by Mark McLaughlin in a marvelous clanky costume in need of oiling and the third was Lion with Paul Cameron no doubt somewhat hot in the heavy costume. All three had their distinct characters, aided of course, by the costumes but nevertheless, maintained by them throughout the show. Stuart Green was cast as the ethereal voice of the Wizard before he appeared briefly in person and Kirsty played the all important Glinda. There were also the parents and residents back in Kansas and two Totos – “Lola” in Kansas (played by herself) and “Lola” in Oz, played by Susie Gardner. A large and well disciplined chorus of boys and girls completed the cast of this interesting and rewarding show and of course, the nine musicians in the band deserve congratulations too.
