For a first night and a first time on Falkirk Town Hall stage, the youngsters did themselves proud. They sang and moved with concentration and enthusiasm: from the likeable and colourful Munchkins to the sinister Witch’s Monkeys to the lovely Glinda’s Fairies to the People of Oz – all wonderfully green. Rachael Bryce as Dorothy overcame first moment nerves to lead and sing with a surprisingly mature voice for a young girl. Her fellow travellers supported her well and looked the parts: Hannah Reid portrayed a suitably dumb Scarecrow; Steffan McGechie sang well as the heartless Tin Man; and Polly Greer made a loveable Cowardly Lion. Emma Gilmour as Glinda Witch of the North gracefully triumphed over the hard-hearted Wicked Witch of the West successfully played by Christie Brooks who bullied the likeable Riff Raff as played by Rebecca Hardie. Chris Stewart as the Gate Keeper and Wizard of Oz coped well with the disembodied voice and enunciated his part clearly. Minor parts supported the main roles with Callum Mack enjoying being King of the Munchkins, as did Freya Panton and Olivia Hunter as Munchkins 1 and 2, and Steven Waugh and Lucy Freck giving a good account of themselves as the Palace Guards. Well done to all.
