The Witches of Eastwick

The Witches of Eastwick– It is a dark and stormy night in small-town America.  Three divorcees, frustrated by the constant scrutiny of their buttoned-up neighbours, fantasise about their ideal man.  Coincidentally, or maybe not, the brash, vulgar and on the face of it distinctly unappealing Darryl Van Horne arrives in the neighbourhood.  It doesn’t take long before he uses his charms to release their creative energy along with their inhibitions!  But hell hath no fury like three women scorned and pretty soon Alex, Sukie and Jane use their newly discovered powers to teach their depraved seducer a lesson.  How does the story pan out and does everyone live happily ever after?

The scenery was enhanced using projections. The stage crew obviously worked extremely hard, both before the production and, during the show. The “flying” was excellent.  The event was very well managed and the girls looked very comfortable which considering the length of time they had in the “heavens” was amazing.

Costumes, hair and make-up were all well-coordinated and created an excellent overall effect which reflected the New England setting.  The sound created by the band was very good and despite the quantity of brass extremely well balanced.  All the numbers were sung well and the balance well maintained between principals.

The Witches, Alexandra (Kerry McCrohon), Jane (Natasha Gwilliam) and Sukie (Aby Yalden) formed a formidable alliance to face the advances of Geoff Wootton as Darryl Van Horne. Both the Witches and Darryl maintained their persona during all the scenes demonstrating various shades of emotion. The self-appointed first-lady of Eastwick, Felicia, played by Sue Port, and her hen-pecked husband, Clyde (Conrad Stephenson), both gave very strong performances and the stoop of Clyde was steadfastly maintained throughout.

The show contained a bucketful of romance, a tremendous amount of comedy and a whole evening of splendid entertainment. Congratulations to all involved in this exciting show.  Well done Petersfield – another great success!
