Showtime 25
Lothian Youth Arts & Musicals Company, Broughton High School
At first sight this seemed an ambitious choice of show for this small company to put on in a hall with a small stage and limited technical facilities – but my goodness didn’t they make a good job of it! Alison Niven (Alexandra), Gill Smith (Jane) and Caroline Fenwick (Sukie) were excellent as the three “witches”, interacting well with each other and with Alan Matheson’s Darryl Van Horne – a devil with a twinkle in his eyes. Their transformations from everyday, dowdy housewives into powerful, sexy sirens were a delight to watch and to listen to as their solos, duets and ensemble numbers were excellent. Another excellent performance was given by Anne Andrew as the overbearing Felicia Gabriel and Robert Forbes aroused our instant sympathy with his portrayal of her hen-pecked husband Clyde. David McMullan (Michael) and Erin Smith (Jennifer) as the star-crossed young lovers from “opposite sides of the track” as it were, also gave strong performances. The chorus made the most of their limited appearances with strong singing and well executed movement. The cast, crew and production team had obviously put a lot of hard work into the show. Well done everyone! |
