It is not often that one gets to see a production at a new venue. For various reasons, Ellesmere Musical Theatre Company were to perform The Witches of Eastwick at The Blue Shed, instead of their usual Sheffield city centre theatre venue. This was both challenging and exciting.
As I parked and walked the few yards to the venue I have to say I sensed a measureable level of excitement from the crowds merging towards the entrance. Once tickets were checked and one entered into a black cloth sided tunnel which opened out onto a large space that was themed as Eastwick, with various cast members in costume and character - shades of the Menier Chocolate Factory venue - the buzz of the audience expectation increased. This was going to be different.
Once seated in the wide auditorium space with the open stage area, things started. Once rolling this production never stopped. Picture book sets, great sound, lighting design and costumes. The three witches were a treat. I could have watched and listened to Louisa Stanley, Keeley Kilby and Carol Wibberley all evening and more. Each character had a similar personality trait but with different core attributes. Subtle but noticeable. It was never boring when they were on stage.
Of course Damien Ross as Darryl Van Horne was superlative. Vocally, visually and character wise. No wonder he had no difficulty seducing the women .All supporting roles did their bit to ensure the production met the high standard we, the audience, were now expecting. Felicia splendidly overplayed by Jane Blythe and Clyde perhaps a little too underplayed by David Jefferson.
Dance and movement scenes were creative and pleasing to the eye. The whole company looked confident on stage whilst clearly enjoying the moment.
Congratulations to all the creative team of Lee, Gavin, Jeni and Katy. Equal congratulations to the stage manager and crew who converted a warehouse space into a theatrical experience. Good theatre.
