The year 2014 marks the 450th Anniversary of the birth of William Shakespeare and therefore it was entirely appropriate for Poulton Drama to consider a production of one of his plays. This was a very challenging and ambitious undertaking but with an experienced and talented cast, director and production team, they certainly succeeded in their task. This company have a reputation for performing a wide variety of interesting and differing genres and this was no exception. Although I am a traditionalist with regard to Shakespeare, I found the modern setting did not offend. In fact, as the play progressed I began to realise that The Bard’s words would work in any age. In true Shakespeare style we had the emotional drama and intrigue counterbalanced with comedy. Michael Holdsworth as Leontes was excellent, with his range of emotions and wonderful dramatic stage presence. His command of the dialogue was outstanding and we heard and understood every word. Chris Bill as Autolycus, providing the comedy, was particularly engaging bringing out the lighter side of the piece with a very amusing and physical performance. No weak links in the minor roles ensured the pace never flagged and the three hour performance had us enthralled. Anthony Henry, Director made the most of the playing area, a simple but effective set, coupled with good lighting effects, ensured the mood of the production never faltered. I particularly liked the use of front of house entrances. This was yet another great success for this talented company. Thank you for a splendid evening.
