This was a very good and enjoyable production from CADs. The characters were very well cast, and the play moved along at a very good pace .The action takes place in a rural Irish pub, called The Weir. We are introduced to pub landlord Brendan played by Ian Mc Caul, local mechanic and garage owner Jack ( Will Tillotson), his employee Jim ( Andrew Williamson), local businessman Finbar( Benji Horwell), and recent new resident Valerie played by Keri Farish, who has recently moved from Dublin.
The play opens with typical Irish banter and craic between Jack and Brandan, and they are joined by Jim. Conversation includes local issues, work, and new resident Valerie, whilst enjoying a few pints and more than a drop of the hard stuff. The three are joined by Finbar and Valerie, and after introductions and small talk, the conversation takes on a more sinister and supernatural tone.\
Jack relates the tale of Bridie who hears knocking on doors and windows, but there is never anyone there. Finbar tells the tale of the Fairy Road, whilst taking some ribbing from Jack, Jim explains the tale of the local pervert who wants to be buried alongside a young girl. All of them very creepy tales. Valerie then relates the very sad tale of her daughter’s fatal accident in the swimming pool, and how she was phoning her long after the accident.
How on earth the performers remembered so many lines is beyond me, and all credit must be given to them, for keeping the action going so well.
The set was very simple but worked very well, by using the auditorium rather than the stage, this brought the action much nearer the audience. Lighting and sound were good, and all in all this was a very good and enjoyable production from the company. I hope they get better audiences for the rest of the run, because they deserve better. It really is worth seeing
