The Wedding Singer by LEOS Musical Theatre Company
Based on the popular film, The Wedding Singer is a lively and feel-good musical set in the 1980s. It tells the story of Robbie Hart, a wedding singer whose own love life falls apart, only to find hope again in an unexpected place. Packed with fun songs, humour and heartfelt moments, it offers plenty of opportunities for both principal performers and ensemble members to shine.

Shan Bhumbra played Robbie Hart and led the show with great energy and confidence. He showed both the happy and the heartbroken sides of the character very clearly. It was lovely to hear him sing and play the guitar during the show, really showcasing his talents.

Natalie Webster as Julia Sullivan has a beautiful singing voice and captured the character perfectly. The connection between Shan and Natalie felt natural and believable, making their relationship easy to invest in.

Amy Hunter-Parker as Holly was confident and well suited to the role. She performed with great presence, and “Saturday Night in the City” was a real highlight.

Matt McAuley as Sammy and Harvey Latter as George brought plenty of humour to their roles. Together with Shan, they worked very well as a band, creating a fun and engaging trio, George’s Prayer song was especially amusing.

Dan Scott gave a strong performance as the sleazy Glen, showing the difference between his bold character and Robbie’s kind hearted nature. Vivialyn Joynson as Linda was perfect for this role with her very strong powerhouse vocals. Zoe Davey played Grandma Rosie and delivered her lines with excellent comic timing, making the most of the script’s humour and she gave lots of energy to her song at the end.

The ensemble worked well together, creating a lively atmosphere throughout with everyone fully involved. The Las Vegas wedding scene was particularly enjoyable, we loved seeing all the 80’s characters come to life. Another great number was “Single” featuring Sammy, George, Ricky, Bum and Robbie.

Director Rhodri Denton, Assistant Director Sarah McAuley and Producer Adam Worton brought together a well-paced and enjoyable production. The quieter, more emotional moments were especially effective, showing strong connections between the characters. Choreography by Molly Parkinson was well executed, with the cast looking confident, comfortable and clearly living their best lives. Musical Director Rob McAuley led a fantastic live nine-piece band positioned at the front of the stage, which added greatly to the overall experience.

Costumes by Mina Holtom and Sarah McAuley captured the 1980s style, adding colour to the production. Lighting design by David Price was very effective, with a great use of colour throughout. Lighting hire was provided by Stephen Greatorex. Sound by Matt Haslam was generally good, although there were a few moments where individual lines were difficult to hear, as this was opening night, this will likely settle as the run continues.

The set was simple but effective, with a raised platform and various pieces brought on and off smoothly. Scene changes were quick and well organised, helping to keep the show moving at a good pace led by Stage Manager Katie Bird, stage crew and members of the cast.

LEOS MTC should also be commended for their excellent accessibility, including BSL interpretation, a touch tour, audio programme, relaxed performances and more. Their efforts in raising money for The Lasting Project to support these initiatives are admirable.

Overall, this was an enjoyable and energetic production with strong performances and a clear sense of enjoyment from everyone involved, many congratulations to all involved.

We look forward to seeing LEOS MTC next production of American Idiot, featuring the music of Green Day, in September at the Duchess Theatre.
