"The Wedding Singer" musical, based on the 1998 film of the same name, is a fun and energetic production that captures the essence of the 1980s with its vibrant music, lots of catchy tunes and a fun storyline. The musical, with music by Matthew Sklar, lyrics by Chad Beguelin, and a book by Beguelin and Tim Herlihy, offers a nostalgic trip back in time to a decade known for its distinctive pop culture.
The story follows Robbie Hart, and played by Kyle Rapallini, his strong acting and singing brought the role to life as he navigated the ups and downs of love and life. Florence Merret played the role of Julia Sullivan with lots of stage presence and good vocal talent. With the bright opening number It’s Your Wedding Day, the show got off to a lively start. Emily Craig in the role Holly displayed a wide range of talents. Sammy played by Gareth Williams, and George played by David McMaster brought a lot of fun to the stage. In contrast, Michael Doyle in the role of Glen Guglia showed us his real womaniser traits. Emily MacGillivray played the role of Linda who only uses Robbie but has no particular interest in him. Her performance of ‘A Note From Linda’ and ‘Let Me Come Home’ displayed her excellent vocal ability. Emily also displayed a wide range of versatility in her performance. Angela O’Brien gave a strong performance as Angie Sullivan, Julia’s mother. Grandmother of Robbie, Rosie Hart was played by Roz Philips and brought the comedy aspect of the role to the forefront.
The supporting ensemble worked hard. The singing was strong, and the staging of the show was well done. Choreography was slick and in keeping with the era of the show. Scenes transitioned well which led to the overall smooth running of the show, and along with good lighting and sound, complemented the production. The work of the production team ensured that this bright, lively and energetic show was well-executed by the entire cast. Overall, we were entertained by another great Helensburgh Savoy production.
