The show opened with a magnificent split set, a superb job by the builders, so often forgotten when discussing a performance. Most of us have seen the wonderful T.V. series and I wondered if the stage production would compare favourably. I need not have worried. I believe we would have been disappointed if the characters on stage had differed very much from the originals but this certainly was not the case. All were instantly recognisable. The majority of performers tonight have a wealth of experience and it must have been a great help to Director Anthony Stone. He incorporated some audience participation at the wedding scene in the 2nd Act. We were asked to join in the opening hymn. As the ceremony took place in front of the stage and one of the characters used a video camera we were made to feel we were guests at the wedding. Diction by all was excellent, so often neglected in many shows I have seen. All on stage were in character from the outset and never faltered throughout. I was particularly impressed by Laura Cullen, Alice Tinker who was the perfect foil for Cathy D’Arcy, Geraldine who also was outstanding. My favourite character was Garry Houghton, played by Owen Newitt. We hung on his every word, his delivery and timing were excellent. Lighting and sound contributed in making this evening so successful. The audience went out into a Winter’s night with a huge smile on their faces. Congratulations to all concerned for another outstanding performance and thank you for your very warm welcome to my wife and myself.
