The Marlowe Players presented an engaging and well-paced production of The Stranger by Agatha Christie, delivering a performance that captured both the intrigue and shifting tensions of the piece.

From the outset, Sue Orme’s portrayal of Doris West established a clear and consistent character, effectively conveying her role as a loyal friend to Enid Bradshaw while interacting naturally with the household staff. Jayne Brookes-Clayton brought warmth and entertainment to Mrs Huggins, combining strong characterisation with an enjoyable stage presence, including moments of song that added further texture to the performance.

Jo Greene, as Enid Bradshaw, stood as the central force of the production, demonstrating an impressive range in both pace and emotional depth. Her ability to transition from vulnerability to strength was particularly commendable, and her interactions with fellow cast members maintained a high level of engagement throughout.

Martin Illston’s Gerald Strange was thoughtfully developed, initially presenting as charming and likeable before revealing a more volatile and unsettling nature. This shift was handled with skill, keeping the audience intrigued and adding tension as the narrative unfolded.

Iain Maple, as Dick Lane, provided strong support, embodying the devoted former fiancé with sincerity and playing a key role in the unfolding drama and final twist. Claire Wade’s Mrs Birch added an effective element of ambiguity, at times suggesting a potential red herring; the character was well delivered.

The production was confidently guided by director Suzi Illston, whose clear vision ensured strong pacing and well-shaped character relationships, allowing the tension to build effectively throughout. Continuity, overseen by Andrea White, was well maintained, supporting the flow of the action.

From a technical perspective, the production was well supported by a dedicated backstage team. Stage management by Gary Peake ensured the production ran smoothly, while the simple yet functional set, designed and constructed by Martin Illston, Suzi Illston, Steve Cooper and Rob Longdon, allowed the focus to remain firmly on the performers. Lighting by Rob Snell contributed effectively to the atmosphere, particularly in heightening the darker, more mysterious moments of the play and sound, managed by Steve Orme was clear and well balanced throughout. Props, managed by Jenny Cooper, Belinda Elliott-Dawes and Andrea White were handled efficiently. The front of house staff also provided a warm and welcoming experience for the audience.

Overall, this was a confident and enjoyable production, with strong central performances and a clear understanding of the play’s dramatic shifts. Many congratulations to all involved
