I consider myself to be fairly knowledgeable about the world of musical theatre having watched and performed in many shows for the last 50+ years but I would have to admit that this was certainly a new experience! In the words of several cast members ‘the show is bonkers’ and at times I was totally bemused but SpongeBob Musical is such a fun show and I loved it.
We were transported to Bikini Bottom where we meet SpongeBob and all his underwater friends who are panicking as they are threatened by the prospect of an imminent eruption of the volcano Mt. Humongous. Each member of this splendid cast was a named character and each maintained their individual characteristics as they intermingled trying to decide how to deal with a potential disaster.
This was an extremely imaginative production which moved along at a great pace. Every line of dialogue was delivered emphatically and distinctly so that the entire production sparkled and was vivacious from start to finish. SpongeBob himself is rarely off the stage and Joe Purcell was magnificent in the role absolutely owning this loveable character. With snappy dialogue, a twinkle in his eye, strong singing and agility in his movement this was a real tour de force. ‘(Just a) Simple Sponge’ was joyous and the addition of glow in the dark dancing sponges was most impressive.
SpongeBob’s best friend Patrick Star was very well played by Stuart Williamson. Somewhat naive and gullible his duet ‘BFF’ with Bob was most touching as was ‘(I Guess I) Miss You’ which was sincerely sung by both characters.
Harrison Owens as Squid was absolutely wonderful. A frustrated performer, he conveyed his annoyance with superb facial expressions and emphatic mannerisms as he squeaked around in his most amazing, cleverly designed costume. He certainly convinced us he was ‘Not A Loser’ as he sang surrounded by sea anemones who looked fabulous.
SpongeBob puts his faith in his third friend Sandy who is sure she can save the day by climbing the volcano and throwing her ‘erupter interrupter’ to stop the volcanic eruption. Coast Kinloch, a young new talent, gave a most perky, animated performance. ‘Chop To The Top’ provided a real opportunity for Coast to show off her powerful singing voice and agility. A young performer who I’m sure we will certainly see more of in the future.
Russell Coid was in great form as Mr Krabs, the greedy owner of the Krusty Krab restaurant, emphatic about what he wants and determined to control his daughter Pearl. Rosie Sugrue has a natural sense of comedy timing and came across extremely well as the somewhat down trodden daughter and boy can she belt out a number. I did enjoy ‘Daddy Knows Best.’
The villains of the piece, Plankton and his wife Karen the Computer, were well portrayed by Robbie Noble and Anna Spence whose somewhat over dramatic gestures brought excitement and humour to the plot. The many supporting characters were all well depicted and played with style and confidence.
This was altogether a mesmerising and memorable piece of theatre. The slick and dynamic choreography was quite amazing with every big production number performed with energy and vitality. ‘Bikini Bottom Day’ and ‘Bikini Bottom Boogie’ were rousing. ’Super Sea Star Savior’ with its gospel singing sardines and the tap-dancing squids were just awesome. The singing throughout was superb by all on stage and was well supported by the well-balanced Bikini Bottom Band.
Visually too this was real spectacle. Costumes designed by the production team were so creative and colourful lighting up the whole stage. The use of a video wall was quite stunning depicting the underwater scenes and changing the various settings. Sound effects and excellent lighting added to this technically brilliant show.
I had little idea of what to expect from this production, but this was an exhilarating almost mind-blowing experience. The freshness and inspiration in producing a show of this standard was admirable and well worthy of the accolades and 5-star reviews.
I can honestly say that it was different from any musical I have seen before but the fun, commitment and talent from all involved in any way was memorable. Congratulations Allegro for having the courage to stage this relatively unknown musical and delivering a real spectacle. Superb!
