I’m always excited when I get invited to go to the Academy Theatre in Barnsley, as I know that I’m going to get blown away by the talent on show. However, this time, the talent on display was on another level. Excellently directed and choreographed by Lucie Cooper and Charlotte McCamley, this was a fabulous production.
The set was bright and vivid, and we were instantly transported to Bikini Bottom, the home of SpongeBob SquarePants. Casey Heeley, played SpongeBob to perfection. His energy was off the scale throughout the production and his vocals on point. Gabriel Jones, was wonderful as SpongeBobs best friend, Patrick Star, and was an audience favourite. The duet BFF, sang by Casey and Gabriel, was one of the nights many highlights.
George Ingall, as Squidward Tentticles, is to be congratulated, I sometime struggle in a costume with just two feet, never mind four that George had. He was wonderfully comical, and i was so pleased when he got to perform his number. Olivia Ellis, Pearl, once again proved what a powerhouse of a performer she is with stunning vocals. Fresh from his run as Jamie New, Harry Bladdon excelled again here as Mr Crabs, proving to all what a versatile performer he is, and it’s great to see if confidence soar with every production.
The villains raised many a laugh. Nancy Pratt and Holly Cleaver played Plankton and Karen respectively and both impressed, especially Nancy with the rap that she executed perfectly. Kadie Akers portrayed Sandy Cheeks, the anthropomorphic squirrel, who along SpongeBob saves Bikini Bottom from Mount Humongous. Kadie was wonderful in this show and once again provided fine vocals, as well as keeping her accent up throughout the show.
The main principals were well supported by, Kayleigh Beidgewood (Peach Perkins) Katie Luditt (Mayor) Lewis Mower (Patchy the Pirate) Lottie Peace (Mrs Puff) Harrison Bailey (French Narrator) Erica Rannus (Gary the Snail) and an all singing all dancing ensemble.
The academy should be congratulated in picking something a little different, as this paid off and you deserved the full houses. Congratulations to all in this fab production, especially Lucie and Charlotte.
