The Sound of Musicals was cleverly devised and delivered in six sections - Fantasy, Fiction, Fact, People, Places, and Praise each comprising a rich variety of songs from well known musicals to the lesser known ones. The first section was a little slow in getting going but the company soon picked up the pace and from then on we were treated to some strong and harmonious singing from soloists, small groups and the full company with effective and well choregraphed movement and dance routines. I cannot possibly mention everyone who was involved in the almost 50 musical items but I will just mention a few of my highlights. Whilst all of the solos were well delivered the outstanding one of the night for me, was ‘You can always count on me’ from City of Angels which was exquisitely sung by Deborah McPherson and the fast moving rendition of the Museum Song from Barnum by David Orange was great. The two speciality Dance Routines - ‘Tophat’ and ‘Rock ‘n Roll’ were both excellent and the male dancers in particular displayed great agility and vibrancy. Of the four sketches that interspersed the musical sections, my favourite had to be the ‘Lonely Farmer Sketch’ it was so funny. All of the company numbers were first-rate. I thought ‘Sunrise Sunset’ was movingly portrayed even incorporating the tradition of breaking a glass and the final section of ‘Praise’ brought the evening to a close with an inspiring selection of songs from Godspell, Joseph, Superstar and Sister Act all being superbly performed. The numerous co-ordinated costumes for both men and women were sparklingly splendid and together with the small band, good lighting effects and the simple ‘stage-door’ setting, the whole evening proved, once again, to be indeed a truly wonderful production. Congratulations to everyone involved.
