It's good to see 'The Sound of Music' doing the rounds again as it still seems to be as popular as ever. This production lived up to my high expectations. From the very start the singing was wonderful with the whole cast giving the well-known numbers their all – the Nuns were fantastic! It was also good to be reminded of songs from the original production which can get forgotten. The children in this show always receive plaudits and praise and for the group I saw it was well deserved, working together as a team singing and acting with great confidence. and showing the right amount of character. The coveted role of Maria was played in a beautifully natural and youthful way by Caron Ireland developing into a really sympathetic and loving new wife and mother. Her singing and acting were outstanding and her relationship with David Johnson (Captain Von Trapp) was very natural. David’s performance was strong but at times his dialogue was difficult to hear. Hazel Wellcome (Mother Abbess) was well suited to the part as was Chris Dale as Max. His singing, dancing and acting were all outstanding and such fun to watch. Nikki Bristow showed some fine timing in her portrayal of Elsa and Hana Beckwith and Gus Quintero-Fryatt were excellent as the teenagers in love. The show moved at a great pace, not only musically but with very good use of the stage, effective set and a limited amount of furniture. My congratulations go to Yvonne for some good direction and excellent choreography especially in ‘Maria’ and ‘The Lonely Goatherd’ which was enchanting.  A talented orchestra was sympathetic to the principal singers helping to make the whole production a great success.
