I have seen or been involved with “The Sound of Music” many times over the years and I was looking forward to this production. I was not disappointed! Much of this evening’s show was excellent. The Nuns in particular were very impressive. Jim Thomas, Musical Director brought out the best from these ladies especially in the Wedding Scene. We are all familiar with the music from this show and indeed it can be a bit hackneyed but Jim and his orchestra were a perfect foil for the artistes on stage, providing just the right tempo for all the numbers. Musicians are often overlooked when talking about musicals but in this case they made the evening for me.

The set looked great and backstage crew did a fine job on this the opening night. The cast, as a whole, gave a very impressive performance. Jacqui Mein, Producer / Director has brought a new slant to this old favourite and I particularly liked the choreography in the scene with Rolf and Liesl, “ Sixteen going on Seventeen.” Costumes were a credit to Wendy Barker( Wardrobe) and helpers. Cast members must have been very happy with the obvious attention to detail and all looked comfortable in their individual outfits. BFLOC have succeeded in bringing together a fine cast for “The Sound of Music”. Sarah McFadyen as Maria was outstanding, in character throughout, excellent singing and completely at home with the role. The talented Von Trapp children were very well rehearsed and their voices blended beautifully. They all appeared very natural on stage with a good rapport with Maria. Cinzia Spiteri gave a lovely rendition of “ Climb Every Mountain” one of the show’s iconic numbers.  A memorable evening, in one of the most beautiful theatres in the country.
