What can one say about a show of this very high standard?  The Sound of Music is obviously one of the most popular shows of the genre so audiences are definitely going to come along but this faultless production was a rare treat for them.  The standard of singing was very high indeed and all taking part (cast and chorus) gave excellent performances.  Florence Chisholm was an ideal Maria, playing the part with pathos and vivacity, partnered well by Guy Pymble as the Captain with a great voice.  Lynn Deacon was magical as the Mother Abbess with the audience in rapture after her amazing performance of "Climb Every Mountain."  A great shame that Andy Freeman was unable to appear as Max Detweiler but Tom Hackett played the role to perfection and Melanie Perry was just right for the role of the elegant Elsa Schrader.  Dan Bullman acted and sang very well indeed as Rolf Gruber and Katy Streeter gave a lovely performance as Liesl.  All the von Trapp children were super characters and their harmony singing was excellent.  Lewes is definitely well served by its Operatic Society - Director Tom Hackett and all involved in any way are to be congratulated for all the hard work that went into making this show so enjoyable.
