Darlington chose this ever popular musical as their Spring Production, and how popular it turned out to be. After an uncertain start with the unaccompanied opening numbers, the show soon got into overdrive. The audiences were then really into what they have come to expect from this group, an enjoyable evening of first class entertainment, and they certainly weren’t disappointed. The stars of the show, in my view, were the von Trapp Children. They were Jasper Wright, Abbie Dodsworth, Mackenzie Williamson, Sophie Ruddick, Eleanor Grainger and Maddison Parkinson, who played Gretel. I have no doubt the alternate team would be equally as good. The two leading parts, Captain von Trapp and Maria Rainer, were played by Julian Cound and Beth Stobbart, and they were brilliant. They were well supported by an excellent cast including Rebbeca Pedlow, who played Mother Abbess.
Neil Harland played Max Detweiller very well indeed, he was really excellent. Elsa Schraeder was also well played by Natasha Magee. It would be impossible to mention every member of the cast, but they all contributed to making this a great show. The scenery was well done, in the fact they doubled up scenes, for example the summer house scene was part of the villa. The wedding scene was fabulous, really well done. Michael Trotter had a well-balanced orchestra, and a good sound system and excellent lighting all helped to make this a memorable evening’s entertainment.
