It was very refreshing to walk into the auditorium to see a new opening setting for what is now an old favourite. The set was not the usual one for The Sound of Music but a fixed set with inserts for the Mother Abbess scenes, with lamps and ornamental features to the sweeping two sided staircase depicting the interior of the Von Trapp Villa and their garden. Maria was well portrayed by Emily Wortley, who brought to the part the necessary air of innocence whilst winning the audience over with a pleasing and tuneful singing voice. The Mother Abbess played by Lynn Kelly gave a rendition of "Climb Every Mountain" that was perhaps the best I have heard. The Von Trapp children all came across very well in their various characters. David McKnight should be congratulated on this his 5th production. The one issue I had was that the sound level at times was not high enough to reach parts of the auditorium, but I did convey this to John Jones. The problem certainly could not be laid at the door of the musicians. The orchestra under the baton of Alan Hutchinson were very pleasing and played at just the right level. Well done to everybody for a very enjoyable evening.
