I had the pleasure of accompanying Noda Rep - Jean Beard - to this performance of "The Sound of Music" and boy! was I in for a treat.
Right from the off I was impressed with the Company's ability to be able to convert the Town's Leisure Centre into an impressive, fully working, almost professional, theatre environment adding to this delightful experience.
A brilliant steadfast performance from Tim Brown portraying the stern military Captain Von Trapp, who raises his family in true military fashion, as his beloved Austria is about to be occupied by Nazi Germany, eventually falling in love with the new Governess provided by the Convent and hired to help with his unruly 7 children. Saskia Fuchs (Maria Rainer) gives a glowing performance bringing some much needed love to the family and eventually melting the Captain's heart as well as his traditional military methods.
There were impressive performances also from Ron York (Max Detweiller) and Emma Parker (Elsa Schraeder) along with the amazingly mature performances from the 7 fantastic children. I must mention Ashley Sharpe (Rolf) who gave such a solid mature performance well beyond his young age. His clarity of diction and singing voice were superb. A star in the making.
But, for me it was Mary James (Mother Abbess) who stole the show. Her finale rendition of "Climb Every Mountain" left the capacity audience emotionally drained. What a voice!
Slick seamless scene changes by the stage crew, the delightful music from the 16 piece orchestra, expertly directly by John Biddulph, deservedly earned the standing ovation from the very appreciative audience. A definite triumph for MBMTC..
