From its well sung Nuns’ opening to the well drilled children and well cast principals this production was always going to be a success. Claire Wheatley was comfortable and assured in the lead role of Maria: her singing was effortless and natural; her rapport with the children clear. Jonathan Procter as Captain Von Trapp was a contrast in his stiff, navy style demeanour but revealed a more emotional side when singing Edelweiss and in his love for Maria. He was ably supported by the sophisticated and experienced Elaine Mitchell as Baroness Elsa and by Gordon Walker as the pragmatic Max ever scheming for his concert. Sisters Margaretta, Sophia and Berthe, respectively played by Eileen Clifford, Gillian Gardner and Irene Dickman, revealed their differing personalities through song and action, while Carol Whitelaw as the Mother Abbess sang Climb Every Mountain powerfully and brought authority and compassion to the role. In the difficult role of Rolf, Paul O’Keane showed his talent and fine voice, despite a glitch with the sound, charming then repelling Leisl, played on the Saturday by Gillian Black with a striking mix of youth, naivety and maturity. Indeed, the children likewise engaged and delighted their audience. Minor principals and the rest of the cast contributed to the atmosphere and drama, most tellingly in the concert scene where the placing of the Nazis in the auditorium and at the exits struck a sinister note. This was a great choice of show for the company’s 90th year. Congratulations all round. My thanks to Elizabeth Donald, NODA District 3 Regional Rep., for providing this report.
