The Hills were certainly alive with ‘The Sound Of Music’ in Sutton Coldfield where Sutton Arts presented this first class production.
Based on the film starring Julie Andrews, this musical introduces us to Maria, who wants to be a nun, and Captain Von Trapp and his family of talented children whom become a choir in a music festival.
Leading this very talented company were Amy Davies as Maria and Paul Westwood as Captain Von Trapp. These two people worked so well together you could see the chemistry between them. They sang and acted so well, a definite hit for Sutton Arts. The seven children worked so well together and you could see they were enjoying performing. They worked so well as a team and I do feel that they all should be mentioned, Ava Cattell, Oliver Dawes, Kyla-Rose Prosser, Lois Stokes, Rory Kilbride, Ella Brookes and Ada Hodgson. These were the children I saw on my visit. I am sure the other team did just as well. Mother Abbess, played by Liz Berriman, was outstanding, a fantastic voice and she made ‘Climb Every Mountain’ her own. The Von Trap Family and the Mother Abbess were well supported by the remaining principals and the ensemble. Each one playing their part to the full.
The set, designed by Mark Nattrass made full use of the Sutton Arts Stage and each scene change was actioned well. You hardly noticed the stage crew at all. The costumes looked good and not one thing was out of place. Choreography, by Janine Henderson, was not over powering and suited the performance.
Gladstone Wilson led a good sounding band, the level was just right as the audience could hear every word from the stage.
Emily Armstrong did a sterling job as director of the production and brought out the best in her company.
A first class evening’s entertainment and congratulations to you all.
