The Sound of Music is still a firm favourite for any musical theatre lover, still retains its magic and remains popular with wider audiences too, which was evident by a sell out run for EROS this week. The cast did not disappoint the full house matinee audience with a very strong ensemble, great featured character roles and standout leading performances.
Amy Campbell shone throughout, with her spirited performance as the young apprentice nun and developed her character from naive to a beautiful maturity in her blossoming relationship with Captain Von Trapp. Throughout the whole show, her clear, strong voice did full credit to the famous numbers. Brian Toward’s Captain Von Trapp balanced warmth with the strict disciplinarian which allowed us to see the charm which Maria falls for. Their connection throughout the show was solid and both gave strong acting and singing performances on their own and together. Amy and Brian’s interaction and warmth of performance with the Von Trapp children was excellent and very natural.
The Von Trapp children were all excellent and gave very professional performances in every scene.
Hazel Keay gave a warm and motherly performance as Mother Abbess with outstanding vocals in the music numbers especially her beautiful rendition of “Climb Every Mountain”. Leading the scenes in the Abbey were Sister Sophia (Vicki McPhee), Sister Berthe (Lydia Clark) and Sister Margaretta (Shona Clark) who showed great characterisation which contrasted well allowing us to see their full personalities shine from beneath their habits.
Bringing some comic relief to the principal line-up was Sarah Booth as Elsa Schraeder and Alan Morton as Max Detweiler. Sarah and Alan worked well together, and their number “How Can Love Survive” was very entertaining contrasting Alan’s comedy with Sarah’s more cosmopolitan characterisation.
The production team should be commended for bring together a very slick show with great characters, superb choral and solo numbers, and effective choreography fitting to the scenes.
A great triumph for the entire club, cast and crew.
