Rugby Theatre performed a popular musical: ‘The Sound of Music’.

The Sound of Music is a longstanding musical and follows Maria as she finds her way.

The principle cast was led by the fantastic Libby Lowe as Maria with an excellent vocal and acting ability and her presence graced the stage. Libby worked well with Philip Evans as Captain Von Trapp, who played the authority figure; he commanded the stage well and had good chemistry with all those he interacted with, young and old.

Chole McDonald as Liesl and Charlie Dennis as Rolf were a good pairing and played the parts well with a lovely rendition of ‘Sixteen going on Seventeen’.

The remaining Von Trapp Children were all suited to their roles with excellent vocal ability and characteristics all the way through the performance.

Simon Brown as Max Detweiler added comedy elements to the role and Louise Woodward as Baroness Elsa Schaeder played the part perfectly showed another side to her acting skills.

Sarah Phipps as Mother Abbess acted with the sincerity required with a powerful performance of ‘Climb Every Mountain’.

The remaining chorus had various smaller cameo roles within the production, each adding to the overall performance.

The music and choreography were excellently undertaken by the whole cast.

The set was well thought out and costumes were in keeping with the time period and overall show feel.

The show did have sound issues during the second half however the cast worked through this and lighting suited the show.

Overall an excellent way to celebrate the 70th anniversary.
