Congratulations Whitchurch Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society on your production of The Sound of Music in your 95th Anniversary year.
Director/Musical Director Garry Bailey and Assistant Musical Director CJ Allen have certainly worked wonders with the cast as the vocal diction and clarity of words made this a most enjoyable show to listen too. In the lead role of Maria Rayner (Natalie Hayward) won over the hearts of the audience from the moment she appeared on stage. Her interaction and warmth of performance with the children (Team Blue) was very natural. Will Hayward as a young Captain Von Trapp stepped up to the role, which was shown in the maturity of his performance. Lucy Chidlow gave us a warm and motherly performance as Mother Abbess and the characterisation of Sister Sophia, Sister Berthe and Sister Margaretta contrasted well allowing us to see their full personalities shine from beneath their habits. Allie Pugh as (Elsa Schraeder) was cosmopolitan and alert and contrasted well alongside the comedic Nigel Davies as Max Detweiler.
It isn’t however always the main characters or words that make a show but those performances that support, like Mike Hall, as Franz the Butler who appropriately reacted in every scene allowing us to have an insight into the changing world of Austria. I must also mention those backstage crew who are unseen (but sometimes heard) with some very impressive scene changes all-adding to the overall delight of the show and maintaining pace.
Well done WAODS, the reaction of the audience should say it all.
