The hills were definitely alive with The Sound of Music this week when Brownhills MTC brought the hit Rodgers and Hammerstein musical to life in Lichfield.
Performing to a sell-out audience, the performance I attended had the audience singing along to all the well-known songs.
The musical opens with a lovely rendition of ‘Dixit Dominus’ sung so well by the nuns and led by The Mother Abbess, Helen Norgrove, who also gave a beautiful rendition of ‘Climb Every Mountain’ at the end of act One, hitting the high note perfectly. Maria, played by Sian Cameron-Prowse, gave a wonderful performance, singing all the well-known classics. I especially enjoyed ‘Do-Re-Mi’ and ‘The Lonely Goatherd’. Jamie Norgrove as Captain von Trapp came over well, powerful and upright. Just as he should be. Sian and Jamie really worked well together. Also working well were Alison Room as Elsa and Brett Dewsbury as Max.
The chorus sounded really good with some great harmonies.
I cannot finish this review without mentioning the wonderful group of children in the production led by Lilly Hutt as Liesl. When I saw the production, the group were the Copper Kettles. They worked, acted and sang so well together. A joy to watch.
I have to say that the ending of the show was very poignant. The family head off to a new life in Switzerland and as the nuns reprise ‘Climb Every Mountain’ the family are silhouetted against the mountains. Not a dry eye in the house.
Directed by Kelly and Richard Tye with Ian Room as Musical Director and Michele Windsor as choreographer, the production values were high from start to finish. Costumes and wigs looked good against a wonderful looking set.
Congratulations to you all for a first-class production.
