The Sound of Music maybe the one musical where many in the audience know every word of most of the musicals number. Maggie Bishton and her production team clearly understood the story well and knew how to achieve the tender moments as well as the dramatic parts of this popular musical.

Maria was played with effect by Jenny Rose. It is vital the audience can warm to the character and Jenny most certainly achieved this. Paul Robinson also brought out the best of Captain Von Trapp, we saw the character change from the strict march loving navy officer to the warm loving father.

Kevin Ward played the larger than life Max Detweiler well portraying the character who wanted to keep in the good books of Captain Von Trapp but also the Germans just in case.

Alison Gregory played the Baroness especially well. She also developed the character and acted well alongside the other characters she was on stage with.

Catherine Tabberner as Mother Abbess was brilliant. A highlight of the show must be ‘Climb Every Mountain’ and Catherine most certainly did not disappoint with its delivery. There were some good supporting roles in the Abbey played by Maggie Stone as Sister Berthe, Anne Richter as Sister Margaretta and Emily Davis as Sister Sophia these characters had differing options of Maria.

For me however it was the younger members of the Von Trapp family who deserve special mention. I was sorry not to be able to witness all fourteen members of the company who shared out the roles over the four performances. The Saturday matinee comprised of Holly Lovell (Liesl), Jarrad Heath (Friedrich), Olivia Brown (Louisa), Sam Ryan (Kurt), Eva Haynes (Brigitta), Chloe Gould (Marta) and Tallula-Rose Eglesfield (Greti). They sang and acted the script and songs well such as ‘So Long Farewell’ and ‘Edelweiss’. For some the Saturday matinee was their last performance and emotions ran high when I was able to meet the cast following the final curtain. I am sure we will see you all again in future productions. Well done to you.

The costumes were of a high standard and well-fitting which was pleasing to see.

The set was simple with some good quality back projection. With minimal set to be moved scene changes were effective and speedy.

The sound quality was equally effective alongside a well-balanced band of seven including Chris Cororan as musical director. The sound from the musicians was pleasing and at no time out played the singing on stage.

As always Maggie Bishton should be congratulated for not only her continual desire to run a fully inclusive community-based group company but also for making the most of a limited stage area.
