Worksop Light Op. presented the classic family favourite, The Sound of Music, at the Acorn Theatre, Worksop.
Andrea Cotton directed a fine interpretation of this musical, ensuring that all key directional elements were well executed. Requiring some minor improvements, the space in front of gauze could have been used slightly more effectively and whilst the decision to use the auditorium was viable for this production, it could have done with some further refinement as it did break the atmosphere / pace on occasion. The above aside, this was a very good production that on the whole was well directed. MD, Paul O’Leary, is consistently strong, again providing another musically solid production, with excellent sound balance from the pit and stage. Tempo, control and harmony were again excellent and the ensemble numbers, particularly with the Nuns, were faultless. The choreography, provided by Kristi Chambers, was simply superb throughout. Kristi managed to reflect the original and iconic visuals in this musical that we have all come to know and love, without falling into the danger of making it to fussy or complex; very well done indeed.
This production was a great combined effort by principles and ensemble alike; all throwing themselves into the spirit of this show. Zoe Nelson, playing Maria, provided a nice portrayal of the character, with some lovely vocals, Theresa Stafford gave a brilliant performance as Mother Abbess, with an incredibly powerful and mature voice, which consistently stood-out from the rest, and the von-Trapp children were all well cast and gave super performances, simply a pleasure to watch.
The main set for this production was grand and well constructed, although design time between scene changes could have been improved. The costumes and props were all well sourced and added the overall visual aesthetics. The technical support was adequate, although errors with the lighting did cause distraction on occasion. The sound control and balance was well handled; much improved upon since the previous visit to the Acorn Theatre.
Overall, this was a strong production that was enjoyed by all in attendance and I am sure that Worksop are extremely proud of the high standard that they have achieved. The warm and friendly environment that Worksop created on our previous visit was again present and this is truly Community Theatre at its very best. From all at NODA Nottingham, we thank you for your hospitality and look forward to seeing your 40th Anniversary Concert in September.
