“Be inspired by amateur theatre” is NODA’s new logo strapline. My dictionary defines the verb ‘inspire’ as to create a feeling in a person and I think that is what we are endeavouring to achieve in staging a production whether we are involved in acting, singing, dancing, costume design, sound or lighting, whatever. I pose the question having had the privilege of witnessing this most inspired and inspiring concert version of ‘The Sorcerer’, directed and produced by Elaine Bishop, who was also musical director. Though the operetta was set in the present there was faithful adherence to Sullivan’s great music and Gilbert’s clever lyrics. There were highly entertaining performances from Camryn Smith (Lady Sangazure), Daniella Ord (Aline - her daughter), Honor Grantham (Mrs Partlet – the church warden), Paula Yeomans-Hill (Constance – her daughter), Mike Hammond (Sir Marmaduke Pointdextre), Kozby Lloyd (Alexis – his son), John Carter (Dr Daly – the village vicar), Adam Bishop (John Wellington Wells - the Sorcerer) and Roy Coleman (The lawyer). All these principals gave performances which were very much in keeping with the characters they were playing. The disciplined Chorus gave superb renditions of their pieces with accompaniments ably provided by the talented band members; a helpful narrative was eloquently delivered by Tania Lambley. This performance certainly engendered feelings of joy, happiness and well-being among the audience who were very enthusiastic in demonstrating their approval with frequent and sustained applause. A truly inspirational performance – well done all who were involved.
