The Sorcerer is one of Gilbert & Sullivans`s lesser performed works, but that takes nothing away from the excellence of the operetta, and Melbourne Operatic provided a highly entertaining mix of potion, spells, and witchcraft.
The chorus gave a sterling performance, with quality vocals backing the principal line up.
Joanne Robinson was most convincing and outstanding as the newly betrothed Aline, with a lovely voice which was well matched with Melvyn Edwards`s Alexis. Particularly from Aline with `Oh Happy Young Heart` and ` For Love Along` from Alexis, both beautifully sung.
The Sorcerer, played by John Torr brought out the comedy required, and he obviously relished the part, with a confident and splendid portrayal. Mike Tebbutt was droll as the rather naïve vicar, who, for a while, got the girl. As the upright Sir Marmaduke Pointdextre, Mike McGhee was perfect, partnering well with Helen Blatch as Lady Sangazure. With Constance played by Jean Edwards, and Jenny Smith as her mother, all the principals made significant vocal contributions to an excellent evening of entertainment.
Director Gary Askam introduced many funny asides into the production and kept the piece moving at a good pace.
The orchestra, as always, an important part of Gilbert and Sullivan was conducted by David Henshaw and a delight throughout.
The colourful set was designed and constructed by Gary Askam, Nigel Collyer, Gordon Fletcher, and Andy Hubbard, and was complimented by bright costumes under the supervision of Susan Strong. Sound and lighting were by Dave Martin.
Congratulations to all who contributed to this production of G & S`s satirical comedy.
