ilbert and Sullivan’s 3rd opera may not be as popular or performed as regularly as other more familiar works but the show bears many of the hallmarks of the composers. This production was well performed with the ensemble singing, in particular, being excellent. There was also some lovely singing by principal performers, especially Alice Giblin (Constance) and Louise Foster. Louise played Aline, betrothed to Alexis (Vic Maranian) who hatches a plan to invite a Sorcerer, Mr Wells (performed well by Paul Anderson), to provide a love potion to villagers at their wedding banquet. Alice performed her role with great gusto and worked well with Laurine Kay who showed good comic skills as her Mother, Mrs Partlet. Constance, in vain, falls for the Vicar whose characterisation by John Lamb was most enjoyable.
There were also other noteworthy performances by Steve Aylmer (Sir Marmaduke Pointdextre), Elaine Moore (Lady Sangazure), Ivor Michaels (Notary) and Joseph Marshall as Hercules.
A word about diction – if you don’t know the show you need to be able to decipher the words and at times it could have been better.
The single set was excellent and there was good use of lighting. Overall, a show well worth performing and well worth seeing.
