"The perfect wintery tale. A creative piece of interactive theatre which engaged audience young and old." This description perfectly encapsulates the enchanting production of "The Snow Queen" staged at Ludlow Assembly Rooms. Aimed at 4-7 year olds, this interactive adaptation by Nick Lane breathed new life into Hans Christian Andersen's timeless tale, inviting children to immerse themselves in the magical world of Gerda and Kay. From the captivating performances to the intricate set design, every aspect of the production was carefully crafted to captivate and inspire imagination.
The studio setting was magically transformed into an icy wonderland, with highly detailed white sets complemented by the cooling blue lights. Deborah Green's talent and dedication in designing the enchanting set truly transformed the space into a magical winter wonderland. With meticulous attention to detail, every scene, from icy plains to dark forests, was brought to life, enhancing the overall immersive experience. Her inclusion of a giant frosted spider's web, (inhabited by some rather large spiders!), along with jars of dreams adorned with fairy lights, added an extra layer of magic to the production.
In this Jackanory-style performance, two talented actors brought to life a variety of characters, including the Grandmother, Snow Queen, Robbers, Dream Librarian and a rather amusing Egg! However, the true highlight was the Elvis impersonating Raven, a delightful addition that had both children and adults laughing with joy. Both performers exuded great energy, effortlessly transitioning between characters with clever use of costumes, props, and even sock puppets! Their versatility and comedic timing added whimsy and charm to the production, keeping the audience entertained and engaged throughout. The actors encouraged audience participation, inviting children to speak with them and ask questions along the way, creating a truly immersive experience.
Through Gerda and Kay's eyes, we see their friendship as they share jokes and stories, including the mysterious lady in the sky and her ice palace. When Kay vanishes, his heart pierced by enchanted glass, Gerda pledges to rescue him from the Snow Queen's clutches. Across icy plains and forests, Gerda must break the Snow Queen’s spell and save Kay before his heart turns to ice.
Alexandra Whitworth as Gerda and Oliver Handley as Kay brought their characters to life with heartfelt performances under the masterful direction of Bev Jenkins. Alexandra’s performance was a standout, her portrayal filled with warmth, courage, and determination, effortlessly drawing the audience into her journey every step of the way, while Oliver’s portrayal of Kay's transformation under the Snow Queen's spell was captivating, providing a stark contrast to his earlier innocence. His performance captured the internal conflict and gradual descent into darkness, adding suspense and tension to the narrative. Throughout the performance, the actors built great rapport with the younger members of the audience, fostering a sense of camaraderie and friendship. Their stage chemistry was undeniable, with Gerda and Kay's relationship feeling authentic and relatable, akin to that of best friends or siblings.
In conclusion, "The Snow Queen" at Ludlow Assembly Rooms was a delightful winter treat for all ages. With its interactive elements, heartfelt performances, and enchanting set design, the production captivated audiences and left hearts warmed by its magic.
