I saw a production of this by CWAGMS when it was written 15 years ago and it is just as funny now as it was then. There is a wealth of talent in the society and this was certainly evident in this wonderful evening’s entertainment. Some cast members played the same part in both productions, some were in both but in different roles and some were appearing in it for the first time. In fact, some weren’t even born when it was first staged. This is a society where loyalty, commitment and friendship abound and long may this continue.
This production was well staged, well directed and held the attention of the audience from the effective introduction to the story to the happy ending to it.
Every pantomime needs a good fairy to engage with the audience and an evil character for the audience to boo. The very capable and experienced Alison Gough (Fairy (Furry) Godmother) and Charlotte Chambers (The Snow Queen) took on these roles. Alison was bubbly and cheeky whilst Charlotte soon had the audience reacting against her antics. What they had in common was their excellent acting and singing skills. I was very impressed by Poppy Wright (Gurda) and Leo Wright (Captain Hook) as they both had tremendous stage presence and their acting and singing were first class. Neville Leedham (Robin Hood) led his merry men of Christopher Urwin, Geoff Tunnicliffe and James Hogg with lots of energy and fun. Their routine in Snowmen costumes was just amazing. The three princesses played by Flo Chambers, Emily Chambers and Sammi Thomas made a formidable trio and they worked very well together in both singing and some slick routines. Poor Vinnie Catchpole as Prince Charming didn’t stand a chance. There were some very strong contributions from Ellen Nicholls (Little Red Riding Hood), Andy Nicholls (Dick Whittington), Ryan Spencer (Wolfie), Hannah Quirk (Puss) and Seth Harper (Kay). Once again, their contributions to the story were invaluable and their changes in character as a result of The Snow Queen’s influenced couldn’t be faulted. That was also true of all the principals, fairies and pirates. The Ice Sprites (Emily Hadley, Maisie Humphries and Kirsty Busby) were delightful as they weaved their way around the cast putting a spell on them. There was some strong backing from a confident chorus of fairies and pirates whichever they were playing. It was lovely to see such a large group of children enjoying themselves on stage and I hope that they continue to be involved. After all this was how some of the adult cast started. I must mention the stunning costumes, quality set and musicians under the direction of John Nicholls. They all contributed to a wonderful evening’s entertainment as did the lighting and sound. Thank you and well done to everyone involved!
