This was the first time that I had seen 'Little Voice' on stage and having only seen the film I have to say I much prefer the play. A well written piece with an excellent cast who brought out the characters to the full. Mary Harding, as Mari the mother, worked hard at this mammoth part of a sad selfish woman looking for happiness. Jane Collins as LV her daughter was excellent hiding away in her room and only coming to life when she sings along to her father's old records. Her cabaret appearance was lovely to listen to as she moved from one singer to another.A prime example of 'It's not what you say but what you do on stage' came out in the performance of Sandra Ramsden as Sadie. This downtrodden neighbour didn't have many lines but her body language said it all. Martin Walker portrayed the small time club agent with an easy relaxed performance. The cast was completed by a sympathetic Billy (Dave Collins) and club owner Mr Boo (Graham Siddle) an experienced actor. The set had been given a lot of thought showing the inside and outside of the house and props and furniture were very fitting. Lighting was used to great effect especially when the house was burning. A very well directed play that brought out all the emotions of the characters and sent the audience home with something to think about.
