From the very beginning this show set off with great pace which was maintained throughout. Ken Horsley gave a very strong, energetic and confident performance as the failing Broadway producer Max Bialystock, and was the firm foundation around which the show is built. Andrew Gardner, for me, gave the performance of the evening as the producer’s sidekick, the timid, fretful accountant Leo Bloom, all nerves and with a comfort blanket to help. He sang and moved well throughout building in confidence and was the perfect foil for the character of Max. Daniel Matuszak produced a spot on characterisation as Franz Liebkind, he was very funny. The love interest was provided by Hilary Wells, as Ulla the Swedish blonde bombshell, played to perfection. Alan Iveson and Stuart Hall, as the outstandingly camp Roger Debris and his valet Carmen Ghia, completed the main line up.
All these major roles were well assisted by supporting characters. Add to that a well-drilled and harmonious chorus, complete with a troupe of dancing ‘zimmer’ ladies led by Hold Me Touch Me (Denise Phillips) was a performance of the highest standard.
The use of projected backcloths worked well, and, together with good costumes and lighting, provided very good effects. The music was provided by a well balanced orchestra under the direction of John Milgate.
The Producers is not a show where one leaves the theatre whistling all the tunes, but I defy anyone not to laugh at this display of sheer foolishness, the audience certainly did. Alison, congratulations to you and all the team
