Larbert AOS gave a hugely entertaining performance of this show. A great opening number and a strong cast of principals engaged the audience from the start. Stewart Borthwick excelled as Max Bialystock, bringing humour and pathos to a demanding role. In particular, his handling of the long jail soliloquy in Act 2 was assured and smoothly executed. In one so young, Michael Laird as Leo Bloom impressed all in this major role of nervous accountant/wannabe producer with his acting talent and confidence. Claire Wilson, in fine voice and accent, was a wonderful Ulla. Humour abounded in this show: Paul Rice put in a grand performance as the forceful Nazi , Franz Liebkind, (almost being upstaged by the antics of some pigeons!); and the camp duo of Iain Davidson as Carmen Ghia and Derek D. Easton as Roger Debris, played with panache by both, delighted and had the audience roaring. A host of minor principals and chorus characters in support gave the whole show a completeness. Add that the costumes complemented characters and contributed in no little degree to the outrageousness, that the sets were visually effective and well handled by the stage crew and that the orchestra was well balanced and you have a show that will be remembered for many years to come. Congratulations to all.
