This was an intriguing play by Graham Greene, well known as a prolific playwright. I see many plays, most of them comedies and also many musicals so it is a pleasant experience to see something that holds the attention in a completely different manner. Graham Greene was an enigma and the many facets of his own life are mirrored in many of his plays. This was a bold and challenging move by The Longton Players but under the direction of Nick Briggs they provided a very thought provoking evening with some very good performances. Nick ensured the pace never faltered which helped to build the tension as the play progressed. Dan Haresnape as James had the bulk of the dialogue and was outstanding . He was very successful in bringing out all the various nuances of the disturbed young man he portrayed. Anna Southworth as Anne was a delightful character who was responsible for the stability and humour, around which, much of the plot revolved and Liz Hobin as Mrs Potter was outstanding with an excellent cameo performance as the housekeeper. Costumes and accessories appeared well researched. The stage constructors and backstage crew have once again provided a practical and appropriate set very well furnished and the different scenes were a talking point as we were leaving the hall. The incidental music used, helped to accentuate the various moods throughout the evening, something I have noticed, and like, from my previous visits. Apart from the occasional hiccup with dialogue and some diction problems this proved to be a very enjoyable evening. I would also mention how I enjoyed the appearance and content of the programme provided. Many thanks for your very warm welcome.
