The Politics of Bendy was the first one act play at Sadleir Drama Clubs evening of mayhem and murder.
I always marvel at how Sadleir Drama Group transform the Standon Village Hall into a theatre.
The relationship of Harriet Nichols (Mary Moroney) and Godfrey Nichols (Carl Westmoreland) is at the heart of the comedy of this one act play. They were a great pairing with super comic timing. Maria’s one liners and Carl’s facial expression were timed well.
Keith Reville played Charles Horncastle. He had the air of a politician, and he kept that upper class accent throughout. However, compared to Godfrey, Harriet and Henry I felt that the character of Charles came across one dimensional.
I really liked Jim Nicolson’s portrayal of the American CIA agent Henry Bannerman. Compared to some of the more melodramatic characters I enjoyed Henry’s more naturalistic mannerisms. Jim’s accent was spot on and never wavered.
Penny Wheadon, Sophie Pickup and David Goldstraw played the other three roles Maria, the maid, Susan Parkes and John Carter. All played their roles well and contributed to the story. David and Sophie made good security!
Penny Taylor made sure that the space was used well, furniture was limited but necessary. If one thing could have been added, potentially adding a few logs of wood to the fireplace would have just added to it and made it look more realistic. I can completely forgive the one longer than normal costume change, because I loved the use of the lamp, it meant even during changes the stage never went to black and it meant it signified the end of a scene and time passing.
I really enjoy coming to Sadleir, it has nothing to do with the fish and chips, but I enjoy the community spirit.
