These young folk have worked their socks off to deliver a cracking good story of the high seas where a brother and sister found a treasure map, their mother was captured by Pirates, then pursued by the family who got caught up with the Navy who in turn was overtaken by the pirates before it all got sorted out. Cue lots of laughs along the way, which took them from London Docks to the strange island of Lumbago in the Sea of Sciatica. The story was introduced in rhyme by Ian Anderson in the role of Deadeye who kept us up to date at intervals. The brother and sister team of Mark Russell as Jack and of Megan Mckenzie as Lisa were enthusiastic youngsters who wanted to follow the map to find the treasure. Ava Beuzelin played their mother Pearl, as a feisty and courageous character who wanted to protect them and was more than able for the pirates when she was captured. She also showed she had a lovely voice and sang her songs beautifully. Jamie McLuckie provided a dastardly Captain Redbeard who in his pirate ship The Curry Bean overcame the Navy and its feckless crew. The seemingly upright Navy Captain Cod Jay Sneddon presented with clear diction and projected a confident, honest manner but he cheated two unsuspecting landlubbers Scuttle and Slack and press-ganged them. Enjoying these roles, Alyssa Stirling and Isabella Kantzidis delivered lots of fun puns and had lots of mileage from the act of swallowing the King’s Shilling. Captain Cod had his work hampered by John Gibson in the role of Admiral Hornhanker who delivered telling puns including a crack at his title ‘Admiral’. All the pirates, landlubbers and monkeys played their roles with enthusiasm and enjoyment at the jokes. With their supporters, the cast performed their best - highlights being the grand stand off between the Pirates and the Navy and the whole cast singing and dancing at the end. The scenery was designed by senior pupils and staff and provided colourful settings. The youngsters were all kitted out in character with some realistic headgear. Overall, it was wonderful to watch the youngsters deliver their lines and see their delight at the audience reactions. Their commitment in making this a fun performance was there to see. They deserved their success and delighted their audience.
