This is one of the most popular of the Gilbert and Sullivan Operettas and what a brilliant rendering from our local G & S. Society. An excellent chorus of Pirates, Policeman and lovely ladies! Mark Ellis as the Pirate King was great, I have followed his career and it is good to see him in such an important role. Good performances from all the principals. Howard Brooks WAS the very model of a Modern Major General in great voice as usual. It is always a pleasure to watch all the ladies of the chorus, and there was a brilliant leading lady in Louise Cockerill as Mabel, and with Phillip Tattersall as Frederick they made a perfect pair.
A very good thing, which always pleases, is the way the chorus and principals make their entrances, always smooth and you never see folk in the wings despite the amount of chorus work involved.
There was the usual excellent set and of course Andrew Burke led the orchestra, always sympathetic to the singers.
The G and S do some excellent work with their charity concerts, and I wish them all the best with those and also we can all look f orward to their next production “Trial By Jury and The Sorcerer” in 2017.
