This was an innovative production of the most popular of G & S shows. An excellent cast, with fine singing throughout, and interesting interpretations of the roles. Particularly Mathew Siveter, with a stand out display as the Pirate King. All played their parts at a good tempo keeping the audience totally absorbed from beginning to end. Andy McPhee as Frederick, and Sarah Carlin as Mabel both gave accomplished performances showing natural ability, their voices combining beautifully. Stephen Godward as the Sergeant of Police led his troops with the required touch of uncertainty, what a Welsh accent! Phillip Fry delighted with his pefect timing as the Major General, as did Jean Krzeminski, Catherine Straw and Sharon Stringer as his daughters. Julie Bjerregaard made a most convincing Ruth.
The chorus, as usual, were in fine voice, and were very mobile about the stage, which is sadly lacking in some G & S Productions. I liked the book as the centre piece throughout. It worked most effectively. The lighting at times was too dark for my liking, but along with the last night audience I appreciated a very good production.
